The Special Collections Reading Room

After six months as Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Special Collections Research Center at Appalachian State University, I was given the opportunity to move into a new position. Beginning January 1, I became the Outreach and Public Services Lecturer Librarian in the Special Collections Research Center. In addition to offering reference and instruction services, I also be involved in outreach activities, including the celebration of Appalachian State University’s 125th anniversary.

I’ve really enjoyed this career pivot and learning more about archival research and how to teach archival research. For example, last week I taught two sessions on the zines collection and it’s been fun and exciting to see students explore and evaluate them with interest and curiosity. I’ve also been working with a music faculty member on potential research topics that students could explore on gender and music within the archives, so while my position isn’t explicitly related to music I’m still finding ways to incorporate music librarianship into my work.

Beyond my new position, I’m also collaborating with some excellent music librarian colleagues from across the country on presentations, articles, and a book chapter on a music companion we created for the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education. I’ll be sharing more info about the music companion soon.
